Some time ago, a champion of artificial intelligence told me: “If you use AI, you can translate faster and have more time to do what you love.” And I replied, “But I love translating.”
From this dialogue, the idea for the subtitle of my translation book was born: “the pleasure of translating.” Because I wanted to emphasize this aspect of my work: the great pleasure that comes from working on the works of great authors (well, not always great; a book is a relationship, and sometimes it can happen that I don’t love it), the pleasure of research, of meticulousness, of listening to others, the pleasure of shaping my own language to harmonize it with another's.
I have been doing this job for twenty-five years, I have translated almost a hundred books, and I still work with the same enthusiasm as at the beginning, perhaps even more. And I enjoy going around telling it, because I have discovered that among readers there is a great interest in those of us translators who work “between the lines” of their favorite novels.
